You may not be aware that New York City B&B’s have been targeted for closure due to NY State legislation Ch. 225 of 2010 which prohibits stays of less than 30 nights in Class A Multiple Dwelling Buildings in New York City.
We believe we were unintended targets of this very broadly written legislation and we are asking for your support. StayNYC, a non-profit trade association of New York City B&B owners is advocating for an exemption for a certain class of small facilities operators who are registered with the City of NY and are hotel and sales tax compliant. There are similar laws going into effect from NY to Hawaii… and all our of businesses may be affected.
StayNYC members are small business people operating reputable, tax compliant businesses, some for over twenty years, and we are now in danger of losing our businesses.
We are asking that the Suite Exchange notify its members of the issues we are facing in New York City. We need help in educating our legislators to realize that B&B’s in New York City are a vital part of the hospitality industry. Your members can help by signing the petition on our website, and liking us on our Facebook page and following our Twitter feed. Please leave comments as well. This type of grassroots campaign is vital to the success of our small businesses.
Here is a template letter you can send to your members when you urge them for support. Please follow the links to learn more.
Last year, the New York legislature passed a law in an attempt to shut down “illegal hotels.” As a result of an oversight in this legislation, registered, tax compliant B&Bs were made unintended targets for closure and have been given steep fines.
The StayNYC team asks you to sign our petition and join the fight to keep New York City B&Bs open for business.
As you know B&Bs are an important part of what makes travelling to New York City so great. Your participation is key as we begin to educate the public and begin conversations with members of the New York State Assembly and New York State Senate.
Please share our petition with your friends and family, and join us on Facebook and Twitter. Please also consider a donation our group has less than 10 members, so we need your support. We will be in touch periodically with updates and news.
Thanks again from the StayNYC team!
Your voice may help keep us all in business!
